'Peasants' with distinction in the Planet Positive category

Elwira Pluta was awarded at the 12th BFDG PRODUCTION DESIGN AWARDS in the Planet Positive category for her work on the film "Peasants" directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. The jury of this prestigious competition appreciated the sustainable, environmentally friendly solution of the stage designer.

Instead of building the set from heavy solid wood elements and producing huge amounts of waste, Elwira Pluta decided to build the entire set from cardboard blocks. All elements were used indefinitely, creating subsequent plans, including the 4.5-meter walls of the church. The jury of the competition organized by the British Film Set Designers Association awarded a distinction for the implementation of a concept that allows reducing set design waste to a minimum.

“Peasants”, directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, is an adaptation of the Nobel Prize novel by Władysław Reymont. The film is produced in the technique of painting animation, known to viewers from ”Loving Vincent”, the previous production of BreakThru Films which was also co-finansed by the Polish Film Institute. Polish director Dorota Kobiela and husband Hugh Welchman are the same duo behind “Loving Vincent,” the 2017 animated film about the life and death of Vincent van Gogh. Billed as the world’s first fully painted feature film, “Loving Vincent” saw 125 classically trained painters recreating 94 famous van Gogh paintings in just under 67,000 individual frames—all over the course of a single year. Loving Vincent had a great festival season and ended up being an Oscar Nominee in the category Best Animated Feature Film at the 2018 Academy Awards.

The film cast of ”Peasants” includes Kamila Urzędowska, Robert Gulaczyk, Mirosław Baka, Andrzej Konopka, Ewa Kasprzyk, Sonia Mietielica, Małgorzata Kożuchowska, Sonia Bohosiewicz, Maciej Musiał, Dorota Stalińska, Julia Wieniawa and Mateusz Rusin.

The animation, ”Peasants” is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and will have its premiere in autumn this year.
